The Path to Writing Well
The pianist learns to skillfully play Mozart, Bach, and Beethoven by practicing. Scale after scale. Chord after chord. Song after song.

The visual artist learns to capture landscapes, portraits, and still life by practicing. Drawing after drawing. Medium after medium. Artwork after artwork.
And so it is with the writer. To write well is to practice—sentence after sentence, paragraph after paragraph, composition after composition—all the while reading, studying, and modelling good writing.

To learn to write well, students need instruction and guidance, realistic writing objectives, interesting and challenging writing topics, consistent practice, continual feedback and encouragement, and a feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment upon completing a finished work.

To write well is to think clearly.
